Victorian Kitchen Range & Fireplace Accessories

"The Phoenix Kitchener" Victorian Kitchen Range

I have added some new products to my Etsy shop.  They are made up from kits supplied by Phoenix Model Developments & Warwick Miniatures who produce white metal and lead free pewter kits in the UK.

I have assembled and hand painted them and added coal to the fires.  The kitchen range was very fiddly.  They also make a 1/24th scale version and that must be really tricky to put together as some of the pieces are very small!

The products are highly detailed and I think are very good replicas of real products available at the time.

Other items available are two different coal scuttles suitable for either Georgian or Victorian fireplaces and a Georgian style grate for your fireplace.  All are supplied with real coal.

The coal scuttle with shovel is available on my website here

Georgian Fireplace gets an upgrade...

Georgian Fireplace with hob grate and coal fire
After a bit of trial and error with the prototype I have upgraded my Georgian Fireplace to a working fireplace with metal hob grate and real coal fire.

It is lit with an LED bulb which gives it a very effective glowing embers look - the photo doesn't really do it justice!

LED's are very bright, last thousands of hours and produce virtually no heat making them perfect for miniature fireplaces.  No worrying about replacing the bulb or dodgy connections though I do hate those little plugs for the socket strips.  Fiddly to wire up and the connections always seem a bit dodgy, but they work I guess.  It's designed for a standard 12v supply.

The fireplace is available as a self assembly kit or as a ready made fireplace.  The small hob grate is also available separately if you already have a fireplace.

Online Workshops in 2012

Firstly, may I wish all my followers a Happy New Year and hope that you all have a great 2012!

I am running 3 online workshops this year through the Minis4All group.

For anyone who hasn't come across this group it's a mix of both professional miniaturists and dolls house enthusiasts who share ideas through the Yahoo Group pages and also the Minis4All website.

It's free to join the group and was set up by Hazel Dowd of Little People who formed the group 12 years ago when she was looking to share ideas with like minded people.   It's a nice, very friendly community and it's worth joining even if you don't want to take part in any of the workshops.

There is at least 1 workshop every month this year and sometimes even 2 workshops to chose from.  There are some great kits to make from a lovely 1/24th scale Labourer's Cottage by Herdwick Landscapes to a selection of bags by Joan Wareing this month.  Jane Harrop is also doing a workshop in June.  There's something to suit all tastes and budgets.

For my workshops you have the opportunity to make a Victorian Fireplace in February, a Georgian fireplace in May or my room box in August.

It's very simple to take part.  Join the Yahoo group and then choose and pay for your workshop through either Hazel or the workshop organiser.  When it's time for the workshop to take place the organiser will send out the appropriate kits in the post and you will be invited to join the workshop forum where detailed photographs and instructions will be provided to help you make the kit.  The organiser will also be available throughout the month to answer any questions you have, if you should need any help.

I took part in one in December and it's great fun.  Post your pictures of your completed kit and have fun making it.

I hope some of you might sign up for some of the workshops and perhaps you'll even choose to do one of mine!

New sizes, colours and a tile calculator!

Over the last couple of days I have updated the JS Miniatures website with a few new colours, sizes and a tile calculator so you can now work out exactly how many tiles you need for your dolls house room.

To try out the calculator click on the button opposite.
New colours include powder blue, green and stone and you can now chose from 1/2" tiles, 3/4" tiles and 1" square tiles.  Tiles

For the perfect finish for your tiles why not buy our white tile grout which is a very high quality grout which gives a very smooth finish, perfect for miniature tiles.

It is very easy to use.  After laying your tiles at 1mm spacings with white PVA adhesive, put a small quantity of the grouting powder into a small container and mix up with a few drops of water, gradually adding drops of water until you get a smooth, thick paste.  Add water with a pipette or similar as you can easily add too much.  A little grout goes quite a long way.
Then, spread the grout over the spaces with a plastic palette knife or coffee stirrer and push down into the gaps.  Do a small area at a time and wipe off immediately with a damp sponge.  Leave to dry for a few hours and then polish up the tiles with a cloth.
